The farmers market has been part of its weekly rhythm for more than three decades, while the summer concert series at Beverly Cañon Gardens and programming at Greystone Mansion add to the city's seasonal calendar. These events are part of the neighborhood's character.
The Sunday Market: A Longstanding Beverly Hills Tradition
The Beverly Hills Farmers' Market sets up along the 9300 block of Civic Center Drive every Sunday, rain or shine, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., with free two-hour parking off Rexford Drive. It has held that same weekly schedule for more than three decades, long enough that most of the regulars who show up with their own totes were not the first generation to do so.
What keeps residents coming back isn't novelty. It's the familiar vendors, week after week, and the routine of seeing them at the market. Harry's Berries sells out its organic strawberries early enough that regulars know not to sleep in. Kenter Canyon Farms handles the lettuces and herbs. Little Plants Farm covers salad greens. On the prepared-food side, Kings Road Cafe pours the coffee, Dave's Gourmet Korean Food covers the vegan lunch crowd, Lodge Bread Company handles the loaves, and Beverly Hills Cookies closes the loop for anyone who didn't plan to buy dessert but does anyway.
The market also carries a few fixed rituals that have nothing to do with produce:
- A petting zoo runs every Sunday
- A Kid Zone with arts and crafts activates on the third Sunday of each month
- PickleFest takes over one Sunday each August, sponsored by the neighborhood's own Nate'n Al delicatessen, with two competition categories: Best Dill Pickle in Beverly Hills, and a wide-open "I Can Pickle That" division for anything pickled from California produce
That last one sounds like a joke until you watch grown adults get genuinely competitive over a homemade brine.
Thursday Nights at Beverly Cañon Gardens
Beverly Cañon Gardens sits at 241 North Cañon Drive, tucked between storefronts in a way that makes it easy to miss if you're not looking for it. Every Thursday from June 4 through August 20, the city turns it into a free concert venue, running 6 to 8 p.m. with a lineup that swings hard across genres. The city's own calendar describes the series as covering classic rock, jazz, Caribbean, Brazilian, and Persian music over the course of a summer, which is a wider range than most single-genre concert series bother attempting.
This year's lineup has already included a Beach Boys tribute act, Woodie and the Longboards, playing vintage surf hits on July 30. As of this week there are still two Thursdays left on the calendar before the series wraps for the year, which means residents who haven't made it out yet still have a shot at a free evening on a picnic blanket instead of a restaurant tab.
The concert series is one part of the city's seasonal programming.
Greystone Mansion's Public Programs
Greystone Mansion and Gardens at 905 Loma Vista Drive is familiar to many from film and television, and also serves as a civic venue. The city runs Inside the Mansion guided tours on select weekends throughout the summer, opened the gates for a Theatre 40 play reading of Dearest Friend: The John and Abigail Adams Letters on July 8, and screened classics during a Greystone in the Movies series on July 16.
The city's own summer guide describes movie screenings during Preservation Month in May and all summer long, paired with guided tours and play readings in the Greystone Theatre. These offerings make preservation and the mansion's history part of the city's public programming.
The Park That Hosts Both a Global Festival and an Art Show Twice a Year
Beverly Gardens Park stretches along Santa Monica Boulevard and does double duty as the city's civic living room. On July 12, it hosted Festival Beverly Hills, a globally inspired arts and performance festival that drew acts including Maruja Limon, Viver Brasil Dance Company, and Klezmer Juice, with the Farhang Foundation and several international consulates contributing performances and cultural showcases. It is the kind of programming that a much bigger city would need a dedicated arts district to pull off, and Beverly Hills runs it in a park most residents already walk their dogs through.
The same stretch of park has hosted the Beverly Hills Art Show, an arts festival dating back to 1973 that brings roughly 250 artists to display paintings, sculpture, and photography along four blocks between Rodeo and Rexford Drives. The show runs on a spring and fall cadence; after its May edition, it is scheduled to return this fall.
